Body Mass Index (BMI) is a fairly accurate assessment of body fat for most average adults. It is an estimation of body composition that can relate closely to overall health. Results in the Overweight and Obese categories indicate an excess of fatty tissue. Excess fat can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke.
Children, athletes, and seniors should be aware that BMI results for these groups require more in-depth interpretation. Also, the formula is only appropriate for adult men and non-pregnant adult women, and it doesn’t take into account that you may have heavy bones or a lot of muscle.
